Lawn Sprinklers for water conservation

By: Reese Forse

Lawn sprinklers help in watering grass lands. They help in equal distribution of water throughout the area. There are different types of lawn sprinklers. There is a single stream sprinkler which can be used for medium to large areas. They are also able to rotate for covering larger areas and can retract when not in use. Then there is a dancing flower sprinkler which is used to water smaller areas. Then there is a portable lawn sprinkler which can be used to water small patches of land. It needs to be connected to a pipe and the water then spouts out of the three heads. The third type is an impulse sprinkler which rotates at the time of watering and thereby covers every bit of land. The last type is an oscillating sprinkler which is made from plastic and is used to cover large areas of land. Its plastic body ensures that it never rusts.

The most important objective that the lawn sprinklers achieve is water conservation. This is extremely important if you take into consideration the water shortage the world is facing today.

There are several different components that your lawn sprinkler system should have if it has to effectively carry out water conservation. The first one is backflow preventers. They function by shutting off the backflow, as soon as water stops flowing in the system. Water stops flowing because of either a spring loaded poppet or a series of relief valves and inline check valves or a series of redundant check valves. These backflow preventers come in various models and styles. Many companies manufacture them. But there are certain rules that you have to follow depending upon your local law about which type of preventers you can use. So, it is always advisable to check these rules before investing in one.

The second one is lawn irrigation rotors. These are more advanced than sprinkler heads as they cover a larger distance with their spray and also rotate while spraying so that a larger area gets covered in the same time. They are therefore more expensive but you are only required to use few heads to cover a large area so that it works out cheaper in the long run. Since they water a large area effectively, they are very useful in water conservation. They are available in different sizes, materials and features. They are most effective when used in areas which require a larger throw of water like golf courses or commercial gardens. They have different nozzles which can take different patterns and cover different distances. There are two good models; one is the Hunter PGP rotors and Rain Bird rotors.

The third component is lawn sprinkler controllers. They are used to control automatic systems. They are designed to control at what time watering will take place and for what duration. They also control which areas will be watered and when. Some even have the capacity to distinguish when there is no need for watering the area depending on whether rainfall has occurred there or the land has enough water to sustain it. In short they work as sensors. Thus, they help to save a lot of water. One of the best models is the Hunter irrigation controllers.
